Training Overview for New Recruits and Lateral Transfers
As a new police officer recruit you will take part in a 12 week Police Corps held in Charleston, South Carolina.Police Corps will cover various topics, including Charleston Police Department's policies and procedures, defensive tactics, driving, firearms, legals, and de-escalation training. The purpose of Police Corps is to better prepare you for success in the centralized South Carolina Justice Academy, located in Columbia, South Carolina. After completion of Police Corps you will attend the live-in South Carolina Justice Academy for 8 weeks, or 2 weeks if the lateral transfer meets the requirements, returning on the weekends to Charleston. Once you graduate from the South Carolina Justice Academy you will take part in 15 weeks (5 weeks for lateral, prior certificated officers) of training under a Patrol Training Officer (PTO).

Specialized Units
Career Opportunities
Charleston Police Department has many specialized units including SWAT, Dive, Crisis Negotiations, K9, Harbor, Central Detective, as well as, Vice and Narcotics Detectives. Once the Probationary Police Officer is released for independent duty the individual is eligible to apply for specialized units.
